Note: There are a wide variety of possible Azure DevOps and Project Online configurations, and this trial environment addresses only one specific type of integration. This focused integration will ensure our customers have a positive trial experience with an easy to understand trial environment, and limited configuration or process related questions and concerns during the trial. Please work with your Wicresoft Account Executive to examine other possible OneConnect configuration possibilities.
Welcome to your trial of Wicresoft OneConnect for Project Online and Azure DevOps. Follow this simple guide to familiarize yourself with how Wicresoft OneConnect works to integrate Project Online and Azure DevOps by bi-directionally transferring project, task and work related items between the two environments.
There are many different and flexible integration options available, and for this trial environment, the following high level integration and OneConnect connector workflow is enabled:

- Sync the Azure DevOps Project with Project Online

Follow these step-by-step instructions to access the trial.

1. Create a New Project in Project Online
First you will create a new project in Project Online, and publish this to Azure DevOps.
1.1. Log into the Project Online website
Log into Project Online Trial Site at: https://hokudemo.sharepoint.com/sites/VSTSTrial/Projects.aspx
- Username: [email protected]
- Password: (Please contact your Wicresoft representative for the Wicresoft OneConnect trial password)
1.2. Create a New Project
- Click the Projects link on the left Quick Launch
- Open the Project ribbon
- Click New in the ribbon
- Select “Agile VSTS Project”
- Enter your desired Project Name and optionally complete the additional information
- Click Finish
1.3. Review the Project Details and Check it in.
Once the project has been created, review the information as entered, and then check the project in:
- Open the Project ribbon
- Click on Close
- Select Check it in
- Click OK
2. Synchronize Your Project Online Project with Azure DevOps
Now that the project has been initiated in Project Online, you will synchronize with Azure DevOps to create the project in Azure DevOps:
- If you are not already in the Project Center, click Projects from the Quick Launch
- Select your project plan by clicking in the information column, just to the left of the project's icon
- Open the Project ribbon
- Select the VSTS button
- Click Synchronize
Wait for the synchronization to complete, and close the dialog box.
3. Edit the Project in Azure DevOps
Next you will open and edit this project in Azure DevOps to add Iterations, Epics, Features, Stories, and Tasks/Bugs with work estimates.
3.1. Open the Project in Azure DevOps
Now that the project has been synchronized with Azure DevOps, you will open the plan in Azure DevOps to edit the work activities:
- If you are not already in the Project Center, click Projects from the Quick Launch
- Select your project plan by clicking in the information column, just to the left of the project's icon
- Open the Project ribbon
- Select the VSTS button
- Click Open in VSTS
Your project should open in Azure DevOps, or, you can navigate to Azure DevOps:

3.2. Build a Product Backlog
With the project opened in Azure DevOps, build out a product backlog of work:
- Click on Boards
- When Boards opens, click on Backlogs
3.3. Add a Feature and Story to the Product Backlog
Add a Feature to the product backlog:
- Click on New Work Item
- Enter the Feature Name
- Click on Add to top
Now, add a Story to the newly created Feature:
- Beside the new feature, click on the "+" symbol
- Enter the Story Name
- Click on Save & Close
3.4. Add a Task
Now add a Task to the product backlog:
- Beside the new story, click on the "+" symbol
- Click on Task
- Enter the Task Name
- Assign the task to Steve McGarrett
- Add an Original Estimate of 20 hours
- Click on Save & Close
3.5. Add Iteration Dates
Before adding dates for this Iteration (Sprint), ensure that the newly created User Story and Task are part of this current iteration. If the Planning Side Pane is not visible:
- Click on View Options
- Click on Planning
- Note that the User Story and Task belong to Iteration 1
Now you will add dates to the project's first work iteration. This Trial configuration of Wicresoft's OneConnect uses these dates when synchronizing work items such as Tasks and Bugs with Project Online, by setting Project Online Task Start and Finish dates to the parent Iteration's Start and End dates:
- Select Iteration 1
- Click Set dates for the Iteration dates
- Add a Start and End date
- Click Save and Close
4. Sync the Azure DevOps Project with Project Online
Now you will sync the changes and Azure DevOps project details back to Project Online.
4.1. Synchronize with Project Online
At this time we will synchronize the changes made in Azure DevOps back to Project Online. The newly created task details, along with information about the Iteration, User Story and Feature, will be synchronized with the project in Project Online.
- Click Overview
- Click Project Online
- Click Publish to Project
- Wait for the Publishing to complete
5. View the Updated Project in Project Online
Next you will return to Project Online to view the updated project and details from Azure DevOps.
Now that the Azure DevOps changes have been completed and synchronized with Project Online, return to Project Online to view the project there.
- Ensure that the current trial project is still selected
- Click Overview
- Click Project Online
- Click Open Project to open Project Online.
In Project Online, view the details of the Azure DevOps project in the Project Online Work Plan view:
- Ensure the Work Plan page is selected
- Select the VSTS Backlog Summary view
Here you will see your synchronized task(s) from Azure DevOps, along with details of the VSTS Original Estimate, Actual Work, etc.
6. Optional Steps and Changes
To further explore the Wicresoft OneConnect solution, there are additional steps and changes that can be made to learn about the solution.
6.1. Add Epics and Sync this Information
Azure DevOps supports additional work organization objects. Follow the Microsoft documentation to add and name Epics, so that work objects are organized in both Azure DevOps and Project Online.
Hint: Don't forget to Publish to Project after you have made your changes.
6.2. Update the Azure DevOps Task Effort
As you make progress on your tasks in Azure DevOps, update the Remaining and Completed work, and then synchronize this with Project Online. These updates will be reflected in the Project Online plan, showing progress within the overall project as work is completed by the development team in Azure DevOps.
